HIV AND AIDS ARE NOT THE SAME THING.

HIV virus HIV enters the body.
CD4 immune cell HIV attacks CD4 cells.
Untreated immune damage Over time, the immune system becomes weak.

With HIV medicine (ART):

ART (treatment) — HIV is suppressed. The immune system is protected.

HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. It is a virus that attacks cells that help the body fight infections. AIDS is the most advanced stage of untreated HIV — a person can have HIV without having AIDS. Today’s HIV medicine can help people with HIV live long, healthy lives and prevent HIV from progressing to AIDS.

HIV is treatable. AIDS is not an automatic outcome.

KNOW THE FACTS. DROP THE STIGMA.

HIV can be transmitted through certain body fluids

Blood
Semen & pre-cum
Vaginal fluid
Breast milk

In the U.S., the most common routes are sex without an effective prevention method and sharing injection equipment.

HIV is not spread by

Hugging
Food
Toilets
Air
Water
Mosquitoes

You cannot tell whether someone has HIV by looking at them.

FROM CRISIS TO PREVENTION AND POWER.

1981

The first cases of HIV are reported in the U.S.

1983

HIV is identified as the cause of AIDS.

1987

The first HIV medication, AZT, is approved.

1996

Combination therapy improves outcomes and saves lives.

2012

PrEP is approved as a powerful prevention tool.

2021

Long-acting PrEP options become available.

TODAY

Science. Community. Choice. Power. We end it together.

1981 marks the first official U.S. reports of what would later be called AIDS — not the year HIV first existed. See the full HIV.gov timeline (opens in a new tab)

WHAT IS PrEP?

PRE= before
EXPOSURE= possible contact
PROPHYLAXIS= prevention medicine
Daily pill option
Long-acting injectable

PrEP is medicine for people without HIV that greatly reduces the chance of getting HIV.

HOW PrEP WORKS.

Simplified explanation

1

PrEP medicine builds protective levels in your body.

2

HIV enters the body.

3

PrEP blocks the virus from making copies.

4

HIV cannot take hold.

This is a simplified explanation, not a guarantee. PrEP is not a vaccine, a cure, or 100% protection.

THREE TOOLS. THREE DIFFERENT JOBS.

PrEP

  • Before a possible exposure
  • For people without HIV
  • Ongoing prevention medicine

PEP

  • After a possible exposure
  • Emergency situations
  • Start ASAP — within 72 hours
POSSIBLE EXPOSURE? GET HELP NOW → (opens in a new tab)

ART

  • For people living with HIV
  • Reduces the amount of virus
  • Can lead to undetectable

U=U

UNDETECTABLE = UNTRANSMITTABLE

A person who gets and keeps an undetectable viral load will not transmit HIV through sex.

Undetectable does not mean cured — it requires ongoing treatment and monitoring with a provider.

TESTING IS HOW YOU KNOW.

Get tested
Understand your result
Connect to prevention or treatment

Know your status. Protect yourself. Protect others.

MYTH VS. FACT

You can’t get HIV from oral sex.

HIV can be transmitted through oral sex.

HIV is a death sentence.

HIV is treatable. People with HIV can live long, healthy lives.

PrEP is only for gay men.

PrEP is for anyone who could benefit from extra protection.

I look healthy, so I don’t need to test.

Many STIs and HIV have no symptoms. Testing is the only way to know.

KNOWLEDGE IS THE START. CONNECTION IS THE NEXT STEP.
